| THE MUSEUM COLLECTION OF MARK AND MARY JO WENTZEL Mark Wentzel started his family’s collection of African art and artifacts with cultural immersion, as opposed to academic rigor; most experts and collectors do the academic learning part prior to gaining extensive experience in the field. Over the last five decades his “immersion first” experience has continued through 17 East and West African countries. It started out with a sign at the end of a hallway which said in bold letters “Study in Africa”. As an older student who had served in the Army’s “Presidential Honor Guard” prior to attending college, he was attracted to the unique opportunity of being part of the earliest study abroad program based in Africa. He then spent two years studying in Sierra Leone and travelling through 17 West Africa countries. At the University of Sierra Leone he was one of seven American students. His Mende tribe roommate took him to his village for frequent holiday/break periods. This incredible opportunity is where Mark began his lifelong passion for experiencing tribes as they lived! He has travelled extensively over the past five decades, including numerous trips to East Africa, where he did volunteer work in remote villages, again experiencing the tribal groups as they lived. His collection is based on his African experience, in addition over the years he has developed a library of several hundred volumes on African cultures, art and artifacts. His initial “academic” mentor was the Anthropologist owner of Galarie Carrefor in Paris, whom he connected with in the ‘70s while returning from a trip to Africa. Over the past few decades he has enhanced his collection of hundreds of masks, statues, textiles, utilitarian items and metal currency pieces. Although remaining a very private collector he has provided artifacts for several different Universities, Art Gallery shows and has donated items to several universities and museums. He has field collected hundreds of artifacts and purchased items from a number of collections in Europe and the United States. His collection includes many items which are rare and exceptional artifacts. |
